How To Become A Musician, Starting Music Career In Nigeria & Make It Big In Nigerian Music Industry (2020 Guide)

Find out more on how lucrative is music in Nigeria, starting music career in Nigeria, signing with a record label contract, how Nigerian musicians make money in the entertainment industry and lot more guides to promote your songs as an upcoming artists in Nigeria.

It is of no doubt that Nigeria is filled with great talented individuals across several walks of life; mostly in sports, literature, and of course, entertainment. Perhaps, sports and entertainment appear to be dominated, and for some reasons, entertainment seems to be the most lucrative, especially music production. As a result of the lucrativeness of the music industry, many young individuals have become highly ambitious about becoming the next music star. In this article, i have compiled some simple, yet comprehensive, guides/steps on how to spring up your passion to starting a career in music and make it in the Nigerian music industry of today.

1. What Does It Take To Start A Music Career In Nigeria?

I want to make a clarification that having  a great voice, musical skills is not enough to start a career in music, it goes far beyond that.
Music, just like any other professions requires certain level of know-how which can then be geared with the appropriate skills and equipments. Don't be like many people who fail to realize this; jumping to music just because it is lucrative and people are making money from it. Now wake up to reality, "Without a solid foundation (talent),you are bound for failure"

As a prospective singer who want to pursue a career in music, you must have first look inward and discover yourself. What genres of music interest you? You need to discover your preferred style of music which should be inline with your talent and skill set, build on it and do it right.

2. Writing And Recording Your First Song

After realizing what it takes to start a profession in music, before a record company will work with you, they want to see that you have taken some personal initiative to move your music career forward. One of the most obvious ways to demonstrate this is by releasing your own album (either independently or in a band/group with other musicians). When a music company sees that you have already released a finished product of your music, they will consider you much more seriously as a potential partner.

It is then very important that you write your first song before hitting the studio to record it. Like i mentioned above, music requires certain 'know-how' skills, you need to have basic writing skill or probably hire a song writer. However, for a relatively new artiste, i will strongly suggest that you write your first song yourself. To achieve this, i recommend Step by Step Professional Instruction for Writing your First Song

Once you have successfully written you song, you can then proceed to a standard recording studio and seek out the service of a sound or music producer.

While in the studio, check out the pre-recorded beats and songs, as recommended by the music producer, and pick out one or two that best suit your taste. Once this is set, proceed to record your first song.

3. Steps By Steps To Promote Your First Song In Nigeria

You must get your music out of the studio and bring it to the ears of the people whether you have money or not. Either ways, i have compiled 7 Ways below on how to promote your song as an upcoming artiste in Nigeria.

1. Firstly, ensure you share your new song with friends and families.
2. Upload your songs on Nigerian music/video sites; sites such as YouTube, Naijaloaded, Nairaland, Soundcloud, iTunes, hulkshare among others. Some are free and some requires a token.
3. Take your song to radio stations for broadcast to wide range audiences.
4. Promote your song on social media: As an aspiring music artiste, you need a very strong social media presence. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even WhatsApp to promote your song. Reaching out to social media Influential for a shout out is also a strategy for song promotion on the social media.
5. Perform live at Nigerian Local shows and Events;
6. Go For Nigeria Musical Audition, Concerts & Contests:
Below is a list of some top music talent shows in Nigeria:

Take your time to search for nightclubs,carnivals, community festivals and among others, meet with the organizers of such events and offer your service at a relatively affordable price or outrightly free of charge. Aside from profile and street recognition, you can never can tell who is listening ( Could be a record label boss). Performing at such event could also earn you recommendations for a well paid performance.

You will agree with me that Nigerian musical auditions/contests has brought many artistes out of nothing to lime light.

most of all this shows are  annually, which means you can get auditioned for any of them every year.

  1. MTN project Fame
  2. X Factor
  3. Star Quest
  4. Nigeria's Got Talent
  5. Destiny Child

If you perform very well, aside the cash prizes for the winners and the runner-ups of all these events, you tend to get exposure and recognition to wide range of audience nationawide. Getting signed under a record label won't then be a problem for you.

7. Connecting with Nigerian Music Record label companies;

Many superstars today such as Maryokun, Reekado Banks used this unconventional method to meet with their destiny helpers. Maryokun, reportedly met with Davido via the social media when Davido listened to Maryo demo of him on Twitter, Reekado Banks before owning his personal record label also met with Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy on Twitter.
Regardless of this, there are different ways you can approach some of these Nigerian record labels owners.
1. Connect with them (Record label CEOs) through their social media handles, most record labels are very active on the social media.

2. Walk up to their record label studios/offices, we have a lot of these record label studios in Lagos, submit your song for review.
3. Send your song as attached MP3 file via Email to Nigeria record label's management Email addresses.

I recommend that you read 7 things Record Label Will Look For Before Signing You.

4. Signing A Record Label Contract

Now that your song has been reviewed and passed the background investigation test, the next step of course is signing agreement/contract with this companies.

 One of the greatest mistakes, commonly made by young upcoming artistes is accepting “slavery” contracts from talent “poachers”, who have dominated the Nigerian music industry. We’ve heard many cases of brutal separations of some top Nigerian artistes from their record labels. Typical examples in this case are Kizz Daniel

“Early last year, it was widely reported that, Kizz Daniel was having serious contractual disagreement with his record label, G-WorldWide.It was gathered that in August 2015, news broke that Kiss Daniel despite all the hits he had only collected a paltry salary of 50k monthly. This, as gathered, was what eventually resulted in the separation of the two parties.”

The above instance was aimed at making you, an upcoming/aspiring artiste, understand contractual obligations and how it could make or mar you. That said, you should get a lawyer and a relative to thoroughly review a contract before putting pen to paper. Doing this right will guarantee your sustained growth and eventual success in the Nigerian music industry.

Hopefully everything outlined in this blog gives you a big picture perspective of what you need to do to get started in your music career. Starting Music Career In Nigeria | 7 Things Nigerian Record Label Companies will Look For Before Signing you (2020 Guide)

Starting Music Career In Nigeria | 7 Things Nigerian Record Label Companies will Look For Before Signing you (2020 Guide)

You may want to ask, why do so many talented Nigerian musicians and songwriters never manage to get a record deal with record label companies in Nigeria?

Before you will even be considered for a record label deal, bear in my mind that you must prove to these record companies that you possess a broad range of skills, character traits and mental attitude that they look for in potential partners in addition to your great musical skills. So these companies won't just rely on 'whatever you tell them' they will do thorough background investigation as no serious record labels will put millions of Naira at risk without thoroughly researching their investment beforehand.

Here are 7 things Record Label Will Look For Before Signing You;

 1. Are you free to pursue opportunities?

Record labels want someone who has the ability and passion to pursue any music career opportunities without hesitation of any kind.

 2. Record labels looks for 'proof'

What are your work ethic like? You will agree with me that becoming successful in any profession does not just happen overnight or by luck; just like you can't become a footballer overnight so as becoming successful in music industry. The journey requires total passion, dedication and commitment.

 3. Do you have a strong online presence?

Record companies are much impressed by you having a strong online presence. This means not only having a lot of followers on the social media but also keeping a close relationship with them. They (Record labels) want to know your fans and how you communicate with them. It shows that you can promote your own gigs, tours and drive product sales, record labels consider this for this reason; they know that when they invest additional resources into moving your music career into market, it will be so much easier for you to repeat the process because you already have a strong database 'fans'.

 4. Are you loyal?

If a record label believes for one second that you may become disloyal, you will immediately be barred from any opportunities to work with them. The more loyal you are to those you work with, the less ‘risk’ you offer in any kind of partnership and the more people in the music industry will want to work with you.
Note that here isn’t any ‘one’ thing that defines your loyalty, but you can be SURE that this is something that record companies WILL look closely for as they decide whether or not to work with you.

 5. Are you a success-minded person?

There is NO room in a successful record company’s budget for musicians who have negative attitudes, pessimistic outlooks and win/lose or lose/lose mindsets. To get signed to a record deal, you must be 100% success-minded, committed to finding positive value in negative situations and dedicated to building mutually beneficial business relationships with other musicians.

 6. Do you currently use drugs or have any records of legal issues?

If you have been involved with major legal issues or have a history of drug use, your level of ‘risk’ in the eyes of any record label will go up exponentially (and will likely kill your chances for any business opportunities being extended to you). Be smart and don’t sabotage your music career success by allowing easily avoidable vices to take control of your life!

7. Have you taken any steps to learn about the music business (or have you been doing everything through guesswork and trial and error)?

Record companies in Nigeria want to know that you are not only taking consistent action to reach your musical goals, but also taking steps to secure your success for a long-term, flourishing career in music. The most obvious way you can show proof of this is by getting music career success training from a mentor who has already accomplished huge things in the music business (such as sold records on major record labels, toured the world and made big money as a musician). When record companies see that you have invested into your music career growth, they will be more likely to work with you for 2 reasons:

1. They will see that they won’t need to invest ‘additional’ millions Naira into coaching you on how the music business works

2. They will see that you possess ambition, commitment and work ethic to grow your career - all things that the record labels look to get as much proof about as possible before deciding to work with you

Here are also 2 reasons why intending Nigerian musicians never pass this background checks;

1. They don't know that they are being tested.

2. They are completely clueless on 'things' record labels look for before making a deal.

Now that you understand what record companies in Nigeria are looking for in you, start taking ACTION to develop the qualities that put you at the top of the list of musicians record companies want to work with. Good luck👌

"Our leaders in the national assembly have no conscience" Banky W Shares
Nigerian singer and former House of Representatives candidate, Bankole Wellington aka Banky W has taken a swipe at Nigerian lawmakers via a tweet over the allocation of N37bn for renovation of the National Assembly Complex.
The singer condemned the move to have budgeted(N37Billion) such a huge amount to renovate an office building at a time the education and healthcare sector are in a state of emergency.

The report had sparked outrage among many Nigerians as they expressed their displeasure over splashing such a huge sum on renovating a building that was constructed for less.

“Our “leaders” in the National Assembly have NO conscience. At a time like this, when Education & Healthcare in Nigeria are in a state of Emergency.. they earmarked N37Billion to renovate their office building. Shame on us for letting them get away with it.
